Existing – Mind & Me

A screenplay, based on a true story

INT./EXT. EVERYWHERE – ALLWAYS

MIND and ME take a wild stroll around a foggy dark plane of existence. Mind leads and Me follows.

ME
It’s very dark in here. Intriguing.
Where are you taking me?

MIND
Some place new. A place you know very well.

ME
How paradoxical of you!

MIND
Did you expect otherwise?

ME
Well, not really. So typical.
Can you give me a clue at least?
I hate it when you do that.

MIND
Do what?

ME
THAT!

MIND
You’re not making any sense.

ME
Excuse me, I thought that was your job!

MIND
Patience, child. I am doing my job,
taking you where you need to go.

ME
I don’t need to go anywhere. But I
can see there’s no point arguing
with you, so lead on!

MIND
Who said anything about arguing?
I’m on your side, remember?

ME
Yeah, right! I’m not falling for that again.

MIND
Yet you’re following me!

ME
Well, I’m just curious…

MIND
Yeah, right! I’m not falling for that again.

ME
Very witty,  ha-ha! …
You know, I’ve missed your sense of humour.
You’ve been a bit too serious lately.

MIND
You misjudge me, child. It’s you
who’ve been too busy to notice…
Now, we’re nearly there.

ME
I guess no point asking where there is.

MIND
Here.

Mind and Me stand in front of a huge lake of black water, like the sea at night. The sky is black too. No stars. But a light of some sort reflects on the water surface. It’s a very faint light that seems to make the water surface tremble a little. There was no place for words, just awe, magnificence and glory, and fear.

Me freezes, powerless to move.

ME
I don’t like this.

MIND
This what?

ME
This whole thing. Take me back, please.

MIND
I’m not keeping you here, child.
You’re free to do whatever you like.

ME
And I guess you’re about to tell me
this was my choice too?

MIND
Still can’t see we’re one, eh?

ME
I don’t know, Mindie. You seem to
have your own, er, mind.

Mind laughs a deep hearty laughter.

MIND
Good, good. Sense of humour coming back!

ME
Well, that’s comforting. What do I do now?

MIND
I’m only here to show you. Can’t help
with do, I’m afraid! That’s your thing.

ME
But you can make me.
You’ve done this before.

MIND
Whoa Whoa, hold on a minute!
Whoever told you that?

ME
I don’t know, I guess I assumed… All that
electricity, chemistry. I don’t know, stuff.

MIND
Oh yes, you assume all the time.
That’s also your thing.

Mind is quiet for a moment.

MIND (Cont.)
I think you give me more credit
than I deserve, child.

ME
Will you stop calling me child?

MIND
Why is that offending? You are a child.

ME
I’m as old as you! We’re one, remember.?

MIND
Ah yes, now that it suits you. But yes,
I’m a child too. I’m not really sure how
else to say that in a way you understand.

ME
Understand that I’m small and foolish?

MIND
Is that what child means to you?
Oh my, since when you feel that way?
I think we have a lot of catching up to do.

Me gets annoyed and teary. Mind sends a soft current. Me relaxes a bit.

ME
Why are we here? What is this place?

MIND
Well, if I have to tell you everything; this is
your chamber, a depth you’ve created,
and clearly forgotten. It is home.

ME
Doesn’t feel like home. It’s dark, scary,
don’t know what to make of it.

MIND
This you didn’t create through logic, or
sense. No point trying to understand it.
You just need to feel it, know it, maybe love it.

ME
Love THIS?

MIND
Well, it’s yours… and mine.

Me stares at the black water. Flickers of light spark from underneath, revealing a staircase that goes down. Me looks at Mind as though seeking permission to descend. Mind nods, smiling.

MIND
Right behind you, if you’ll have me.

Me reaches out my hand, and Me and Mind step into the water, towards the flickering light.

Have you joined your mind on an adventure recently?
