Every geographical location on Planet Earth marked a full trip around the Sun yesterday. 365 Earth rotations between light and shadow. The planet tirelessly continues its journey, rotating on its imaginary axis, completing incomprehensibely massive full rotations around our Star. There was no pause, no breath-catching moment; the movements continued, marked only by a domino of countdowns from ‘East’ to ‘West’.
The time difference caused by the geographical locations created something similar to a ripple effect, a wave travelling all the way up to the last point in the furthest west that day/night!
It was a time of beautiful sentiments, a time of hope, looking to a new beginning, a new imaginary beginning – according to one calendar, that is. And here is where questions start to emerge. Questions like: whose calendar is more widely celebrated? What is the meaning of this, or indeed any other, celebration?
But, in keeping with the spirit of beautiful sentiments, let’s take this one calendar celebration as an opportunity to pause and ponder on our existence for a moment. By ‘ponder’ I mean simply ponder; truly imagine and appreciate our place on this beautiful planet, in the solar system, in this galaxy, within the universe.
If questions are to emerge, however, let’s soak them in imagination, marinate them in story-power, sprinkle them with reviving fantasies, and mix them with scientific curiosity; questions of the ‘what-if’ kind:
What-if we existed on a bigger (or smaller) Earth?
What if we had two suns?
What if we had two or more moons?
What if our days were longer, or shorter?
What if we didn’t have ‘time’?
What if we never fought each other?
What if we lived forever?
What if…
Happy New beginning, everyday of every year, of every calendar!
